The History of Fusion Cuisine

This way of preparing Fusion Cuisine in San Diego Restaurants has been around longer than you may think so is not really something that is new particularly in the more enlightened San Diego restaurants where the fusion or merging of different cuisine has been around for a couple of decades. It was in the 1970s where certain enlightened chefs, for example the culinary legend Wolfgang Puck began to introduce the concept of fusion cuisine and experiment with the technique of merging food cuisine. He is acknowledged as one of the pioneers of this technique. Wolfgang Puck is widely acknowledged as the driving force and brains behind the common culinary fusions and pairings.

A great example of the common culinary fusions or merging of cuisines is the fusion or merging of Asian cuisine with European cuisine, which is commonly referred to in San Diego as, Eurasian cuisine.  Chef Wolfgang Puck had the advantage of extensive knowledge of both cuisines, thus making it relatively easy to apply his knowledge to creat this fusion cuisine. Initially Puck had been trained as a chef in Europe, and was also thoroughly familiar with the Asian dishes. Eurasian basically combines two cooking techniques and dishes, so you can end up with poached tofu, for example, which generally mixes European and Asian method of poaching.

Obviously, this form of cooking is not limited to Eurasian cuisines. Asian foods are also combined. You can find dishes that combine Thai food with Malaysian food or Malaysian cuisines with Vietnamese dishes. Combining cuisines of countries from the same region, however, is less challenging. It is actually easier to combine ingredients from the same region because these countries have, more or less, influenced each other in their cooking.

Over the years, fusion cuisine restaurants emerged all over the San Diego area. Many of these restaurants were established in the San Diego Gaslamp district restaurant area. In fact, you would likely find these fusion cuisine restaurants in San Diego still offering the same mixed cuisines.  The San Diego Gaslamp District restaurant areas are actually prime spots for fusion cuisine restaurants in San Diego since these are also the areas where cultural integration is more dominant. Therefore, people are more acceptable of the combined culinary dishes in San Diego restaurants.
